An Intervention, Still Turning

An Intervention, Still Turning returns to the mechanism of an earlier work, an automatic skipping rope first constructed some eighteen years ago around childhood memories and an experience of loss within the family. The mechanism is now contained within a vertical wooden frame, where the familiar form becomes less recognisable.

The frame itself seems to change the status of the object as much as its orientation. What previously made sense through its relationship to a childhood game now resembles a museum artefact. The rope can still repeat the action of skipping, although it can no longer function as a skipping rope.

Something of the earlier work remains recognisable, although the object is now encountered from a different position. It remains familiar, but it becomes difficult to know how much of that familiarity belongs to the object and how much is a result of the circumstances around it.
